Palforzia
What is Palforzia?
Palforzia is the first FDA-approved oral immunotherapy for peanut allergy. Patients on Palforzia should still maintain a peanut-free diet and have Epi-Pen or Auvi-Q for severe reactions. It is not a cure for peanut allergy, but when given daily as intended, Palforzia can help decrease sensitivity to peanuts over time, as well as reduce the severity of allergic reactions that may occur with accidental peanut exposure.
Palforzia comes in capsule form, each containing measured amounts of peanut protein.
Patients will open the capsule and sprinkle its contents over one-to-two spoonfuls of semi-solid food, i.e., apple sauce, yogurt, frosting, mashed fruit, etc. The capsules are then discarded.
Who can take Palforzia?
- Patients ages 4-17 years with a diagnosed peanut allergy.
- Patients who do not currently have uncontrolled asthma and/or eosinophilic esophagitis.
